The Woodruff House

The Woodruff House and Eaton Store Museum is operated and maintained by the Hillside Historical Society. Purchased by the Society in 1978, the house has been faithfully restored to its original grandeur. The Woodruff House is unique in that it spans 3 centuries in one structure. From the original 1735 building, to the 1790 addition, to the 1890's kitchen all the way to the 1900's store. The society has also added to the grounds an authentic post and beam Barn, a Phil Rizutto and All Sports Museum honoring the Hillside legend as well as an archive to house the many documents the society has obtained over the years.

Please use the links under virtual tour to the left to explore each section of this truly unique historical landmark.

The Woodruff House Open the 3rd Sunday of each Month, 2-4pm and by appointment.

Want to visit the Woodruff House? Stop by on the 3rd Sunday of any month and have one of the society members give you a VIP tour of the house and grounds. Special visits can be arranged by request.

Baseball Hall of Famer and Longtime Hillside Resident Phil Rizutto Passes Away

Phil Rizzuto - a long time resident of Hillside, New Jersey passed away August 14th at the age of 89. To those of us who grew up in Hillside Phil was a local legend, but he was also just another normal resident of the town we called home. It wasn't unusual to see Phil at the local barbershop or at the corner store and he always meet you with a smile and a hello.

Phil supported the Hillside Historical Society and he was a frequent guest at our pancake breakfasts and Apple Festivals throughout the years. As the Woodruff House grew to include a museum in his honor Phil would often stop by to visit and sign autographs for the many children who sat in awe of this Yankee Legend.

The last time I saw Phil was at our three centuries event a couple of years ago. He sat on the porch of the woodruff for hours and signed autographs and told stories to the many visitors to the house.

The Hillside Historical Society would like to sent our condolences out to Cora and the rest of the Rizuto family. We will never forgot him.

Apple Orchards are Back!

As some of you may know, a large part of the original Woodruff house property consisted of Apple orchards . Apples, Apple Cider, Apple pies and other apple products were a mainstay of the Woodruff farms. The Hillside Historical continued this apple heritage when we hosted Apple Festivals to raise money for the original restoration of the house. By the time the society took over the house the apple trees were long gone. But thanks to the work of our Our Trustee, Peter Anderson and your generous donations a small apple orchard now stands on the property.
